Volunteer Roles

PLEASE NOTE: While families are more than welcome to have an extended family member volunteer (ie. grandparent, older sibling, aunt/uncle), they will need to obtain a Working With Children check. Forms are available from Australia Post. The fee for volunteers is $11.00. Parents and guardians are exempt from this national requirement.

Site Officials

We require a key official at every site. The official must be familiar with the rules and regulations of how to run the site in question. For this reason, we ask that those volunteering for these roles attend an information session or complete the relevant online training modules prior to competition so you are familiar with the important procedures involved. On competition days, you will oversee the running of the nominated site. Sites available are:

  • Long jump
  • Triple jump
  • High jump
  • Discus
  • Shot put
  • Javelin
  • Place judges
  • Starter

Site Assistants (Where required.)

Each of the above sites may require an assistant. These are generally parent helper/chaperones attending the site with the athletes. The site assistant does not need to have prior experience with athletics. Your job will be to assist the Key Official in running the site and will involve measuring, ensuring the safety of athletes, maintenance of the site, etc. Although it’s not essential, it will be helpful to have an understanding of the rules and regulations of the site, and for this reason, you are also invited to complete the online training for site officials. This is a great opportunity to watch your child’s events while helping the club out at the same time.

Group Leaders

Every age and gender group (ie. U8 girls, U10 boys, etc.) will be required to have a designated group leader. On each competition day that you’re rostered, you will marshal your age group when they are called for an event and escort them to the relevant site in an orderly fashion. You will keep the athletes organised and on-task, ensuring their safety and the smooth running of the event. You will record the results for the event. Once the event is finished, you will see that the group leaves the arena appropriately before repeating the process when the group’s next event is called. This is a great opportunity to watch your child’s events while helping the club out at the same time.

Group Assistants

Every age and gender group (ie. U8 girls, U10 boys, etc.) will need an assistant. When your group is called for an event, you will proceed to the relevant site. You will assist the site official and site assistant where necessary, such as measuring or raking a pit. You may also need to assist the group leader with the organisation of athletes. This is a great opportunity to watch your child’s events while helping the club out at the same time.

Set-up/Pack-down

Each week, an age group will be rostered to help with set-up and pack-down.

Setup involves arriving at Wellard Oval at 7am on the nominated morning to assist in setting up each site. You will work under the direction of our Equipment Manager. Where possible, you’ll have the rest of that day to enjoy the competition.

Pack-down involves returning all equipment to the storage shed. Once a site has finished for the day, our pack-down volunteers can start their job. Again, you will work under the direction of our Equipment Manager.

First Aid Officer

We require a parent to be on stand-by to administer low level first aid, ie. bandaids and icepacks.

Canteen Helpers

We may require two volunteers on each roster to assist our canteen managers in running the canteen.
